Shankar Chaudhary ends 24-yr rein of Bhatol, elected Banas Dairy chief

Announces reduction in ghee price by Rs 40 per kg.

MoS for Health Shankar Chaudhary, who was elected unopposed as chairperson of Banas Dairy on Sunday, announced a reduction of Rs 40 per kg in the price of ghee produced by the cooperative. The reduction in price would be effective from Monday.

With Chaudhary’s election as chairperson of Banaskantha District Cooperative Milk Federation at Palanpur, the 24-year rein of Parthi Bhatol, who did not contest this time, at the top of Asia’s largest dairy cooperative came to an end.

Mavji Desai, chairman of Deesa Agriculture Produce Market Committee, was elected Chaudhary’s deputy.

After his election, Chaudhary worshipped a Kankreji cow and garlanded the statue of Banas Dairy founder Galbabhai Nanjibhai Chaudhary.

Addressing a function on the occasion, he said henceforth the dairy would not charge for email facility from cattle breeders. Chaudhary would take charge from Monday, sources said.

It was for the first time since 1991 that Bhatol had the taste of defeat in the Banas Dairy elections, which were concluded recently. He was the unchallenged leader of the cooperative sector in the district for almost a quarter century and also made chairman of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, Anand, which owns the famous Amul brand. He had reached the position by replacing the late Dr Verghese Kurien.

Chaudhary is already chairman of the Banaskantha District Cooperative Bank Ltd and with election as chief of Banas Dairy, his grip on cooperatives politics in the district became stronger.

In this election, the panel led by Chaudhary had won 10 out of 14 seats, while Bhatol’s panel managed only three. One seat was won by Dhanera Congress MLA Joitaram Patel.
