SC won’t quash HC order,top cop Satish Verma is back in dock

According to case details,while one Jasu Gagan Shial was killed by police allegedly in self-defence when they had gone to arrest him and he tried to run away,the other two — Aher Ranmal Ram and Aher Narayan Jesti Bandhiya — were found dead allegedly while in police custody.

Following the three deaths,a voluntary group,Action Committee for Prevention of Police Atrocities,had moved a PIL in 1997 against the murders carried out allegedly under the stewardship of Satish Verma. A division bench of the HC,in March 1998,ordered the then special inspector general of police,CID (Crime),to probe into the three deaths and submit a report in six months.

However,in 2012,Jasu’s brother,Hiralal Shial,moved a petition before the HC,alleging that nothing had been done in the case by the special IGP of CID (Crime) and sought fresh directions from the court.

Acting on the petition,the HC had in April last year ordered state government to initiate an inquiry into the incidents and submit a report before the court in three months.

Verma subsequently approached the SC,where he claimed that he had a copy of the probe report by the then IGP giving him a clean chit.

Dismissing his plea,the SC today said he could approach the HC with the copy of the report.
