RMC engineers get notice for poor roads

The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Friday issued showcause notices to four city engineers seeking explanation on the frequent damages on the roads constructed in the last four years.

The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Friday issued showcause notices to four city engineers seeking explanation on the frequent damages on the roads constructed in the last four years. This is probably for the first time in the state that a civic body is pulling up engineers for the poor quality of roads.

RMC Commissioner Ajay Bhadu issued notices to M R Kamalia (central zone),V C Rajyaguru (west zone),B U Joshi (east zone) and C M Pandya. If these Class I officers fail to give a satisfactory explanation in 10 days, the RMC will take further action, said officials.

Notices were served based on a survey done by the corporation following widespread complaints on the poor condition of roads. ‘Now,a new road policy has been introduced that will employ new methods, proper design and best quality materials to build best quality roads,” said Bhadu.

In the survey led by Bhadu,a 160-km stretch on 74 roads constructed in the last four years were covered, which found as many as 1,190 potholes. Some half a dozen main stretches, including University Road,Gondal Road,Sant Kabir Road,Sadhu Vaswani Road, were hardly motorable. Some of these roads were repaired or given touch-ups at regular intervals.

Last month, when the ruling BJP,with Bhadu by the side, had called a press conference to announce a new housing scheme for the urban poor, standing committee chairman Narendra Solanki had publicly admitted failure to maintain quality standard in road construction.

This open admission and mounting pressure from the opposition Congress made the newly appointed municipal commissioner to conduct a survey.

Last week, city Congress leaders sat on a three-day fast demanding action against corrupt officials and contractors in this connection. Two days ago, they made a representation to call a special general board to discuss issues related to poor condition of roads.
