Giving a call for the unity of the two dominant Patidar sub-castes — Leuva and Kadva — Rajya Sabha member Narhari Amin urged people on Sunday to resolve to forget the differences as “in the name of caste and religion, political parties across the country are trying to create differences between communities”.

Amin was speaking in Ahmedabad at the fifth Mahila Adhiveshan organised by three Patidar-run organisations — Kadva Patidar Parivar Mahila Vikas Trust, Luv-Kush Mahila Utkarsh Trust, and Patidar Parivar Trust (Luv-Kush).

“Let’s take a resolution to forget the differences between Leuva and Kadva. Already in the name of caste and religion, political parties across the country are trying to create differences between communities. We need to get together,” Amin said.

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandien Patel, who is from the Leuva sub-group, was supposed to preside over the event but could not come due to the ongoing Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, the organisers said. She was represented by her daughter Anar Patel, a social entrepreneur and founder of Craftroots.

Highlighting the issues of increasing numbers of old-age homes and drug addiction, Anar Patel said, “It is the responsibility of our (Patidar) women to take care of our elders and ensure that the numbers of old-age homes do not go up in the state.”

“Also, it needs to be ensured that there is no addiction in our homes — be it tobacco, alcohol, and now, there is a new trend of drugs in Gujarat. You hear various names of drugs these days. What had happened to Punjab is now taking place in Gujarat too. If our children are taught principles right from childhood, it will help them stay away from drugs. To end drug menace in our homes, we need to show our shakti swaroop,” she said.

Dr Jitubhai Patel, chairman of the Patidar Parivar Trust (Luv-Kush), also raised the issue of old-age homes in his concluding address.

Referring to the recent incident of a Patidar woman being paraded in Amreli by the Amreli police in a case related to a forged letter — condemned by leaders across party lines — Patel said, “The one incident in Amreli should not happen again. Let us work together to awaken the nation’s Nari Shakti.”

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who is from the Kadva Patidar sub-group, listed the women-oriented schemes implemented by the government from launching a Gender Budget to ensuring that women are safe, especially during Navratri. He also highlighted a 13% increase in the budget allocation for the Women and Child Development department, NAmo Lakshmi, and NAmo Saraswati schemes for girl students among others.
