Rajkot self-immolations: BJP councillor to be questioned

Dharmendra will be the fourth BJP councillor to be questioned in the case.

A day after questioning BJP corporators Rajendrasinh alias Rajbha Jhala and Kamlesh Mirani, city police on Monday said they would also question another BJP corporator,Dharmendra Mirani,in connection with the self-immolation of five members of a Nepalese family early this month. Dharmendra will be the fourth BJP councillor to be questioned in the case.

“We have questioned Rajbha and Kamlesh. The name of another corporator,Dharmendra, has also cropped up in the case and we shall soon summon him for questioning,” Mahendrasinh Rathod,a division police inspector who is investigating the case, said. The police have arrested Haresh Vaja (55),Dushyant Tank (35),Rajesh Dholakia (43) and Lalit Parekh (68) in connection with the case. All four, who are in judicial custody, are residents of Chhotu Nagar Cooperative Housing Society.

Hours before he succumbed to his burns on April 3,Girish Dalvani (35) had alleged “harassment” by Jhala and Kamlesh for the extreme step of the family. Girish’s wife,Gauri, had named them as accused in her complaint. Police say the four had given the name of Dharmendra during their interrogation. Dharmendra is a BJP councillor from Ward 2 in which Chhotunagar,a housing society on Raiya Road, falls.

Meanwhile, around 10 days after three women and two men of the Dalwani family set themselves on fire in the office of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) on April 3,Jhala,a corporator from Ward 2 and Kamlesh,a corporator from Ward 12,had turned up at the office of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) in the city late on Sunday evening.
