Problem of plenty for BJP as former MLAs and mayors eye city unit president posts
On January 4, the state BJP had sent its observers to different districts and municipal corporations to accept the forms of candidates.

From former MLAs to mayors and deputy mayors, at least 70 members — the highest among the four larger city units of Gujarat — have expressed interest for the post of BJP president in Surat city. However, the party has not been able to decide its city unit chiefs in the ongoing organisation overhaul in the state.
BJP sources said the names of district unit presidents have been decided but the names of the presidents of four cities, including Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Rajkot, are yet to be decided.
In Surat district, 17 members applied for the post of district president. According to sources, 25 and 24 proposal forms have been received for Ahmedabad city and district, respectively. In Vadodara, 55 members expressed interest for the post of city president and 54 at the district-level. In Rajkot, the 33 and 24 forms were received for city and district unit presidents, respectively.
The names were to be decided on January 10, but a party source told The Indian Express that Union Minister for Jal Shakti, C R Paatil, was in Ahmedabad and the names will be “hopefully decided and declared soon”.
On January 4, the state BJP had sent its observers to different districts and municipal corporations to accept the forms of candidates. The teams completed their procedures on January 4 itself, and held meetings with local BJP MLAs and MPs, after which, a list was prepared.
The list was handed over to the state BJP parliamentary board a couple of days ago for the final decision, it is learnt.
Gujarat BJP vice-president and former Surat MLA Janak Bagdanawala is also among the contenders for Surat city president post. Candidates eyeing the posts also include those in the Paatil camp and the rival camp. Four women have also filed their forms for the city BJP post.
In Paatil’s home pitch of Surat, where former Ahmedabad MLA Rakesh Shah, Panchmahal organisational secretary Kuldeep Solanki, Chhota Udaipur party incharge Ramesh Ukani and Surat vice-president Pankaj Desai were delegated to accept the forms, the tussle is between picking those who are originally from Surat and migrants of Saurashtra.
