Police begin crackdown on motorcycle gangs

Personnel from the Ahmedabad City Police and the Traffic Department have undertaken a combing operation to control the spiralling motor vehicle theft in the city.

Personnel from the Ahmedabad City Police and the Traffic Department have undertaken a combing operation to control the spiralling motor vehicle theft in the city. The police have already collected Rs 6,27,185 in the last four days by way of penalties.

The combing started on February 5 after the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner issued a circular to organise a drive and catch offenders in connection with loots,motor vehicle thefts and road thefts in the city.

Besides,the Traffic Police have also detained offenders for violating traffic rules.

During a round the clock duty,the police seized 473 and 495 vehicles respectively in the first two days. On Monday,72 vehicles were seized.

Senior officers in the Traffic Department said that of late,biker gangs had become a menace for the people.

Incidents of motor vehicle thefts as also loots,chain and bag snatchings by motorcycle-borne gangs had increased. During the combing operation,stolen bikes used by the gangs were confiscated,the police said.

The officers further said there is one suspected biker gang that has given a tough time to the police.

Combing operation has been arranged to trace the gang and some others that have come up in the city lately,said an officer.

The police have also checked more than 30,000 motorcycles in the city in the last four days. The combing would go on for a couple of weeks in the city,the officer added.
