The three-day international congress of planners and architects at CEPT University concluded on Thursday with a summary of the event expressing general disappointment over the absence of disciplinary focus on the urban poor.

At the “summary of conference proceedings” that evaluated the 164 paper presentations made during the 10th International Congress of Asian Planning Schools, professors who summarised the six themes individually stressed on the need for looking at planning from the view of “the other half”.

“There is a general shortage of equity aspects in the papers,” said Dinesh Mehta,Professor Emiritus of CEPT. “But how the poor are coping with urbanity and its problems is left out. We certainly need to start looking at the other half.”

The congress covered six main themes relating to Asian cities that included sustainability and climate change, economic boom and crisis, maintaining harmony between traditional and modern, infrastructure services, planning education, and housing in development.

While there were only seven paper presentations on the theme of “Economic Boom and crisis: Impact on Asian Cities”,there were 60 on the “Sustainability and Climate change”. However,Professor Parthasarathy,of the faculty of Planning and Public Policy at CEPT,said in the 60 papers presented on the theme of sustainability, there was very little mention of the “issue of governance”,underlining it was a serious omission.
