‘Seva Paramo Dharma’, the Sanskrit phrase which translates as ‘service is considered as the greatest religion’, found a mention in the virtual address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday at the Karyakar Suvarna Mahotsav of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Service has been placed much higher than devotion, faith and worship, the Prime Minister underlined. He urged the volunteers to chase one issue year.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel were present at the event which saw thousands of BAPS volunteers in attendance. Volunteers from 30 countries including the UK, Europe, the USA, Australia, Middle East, African and Asia Pacific countries reached Ahmedabad for the event.

The event to felicitate service and devotion of “1 lakh BAPS volunteers” worldwide is also said to be a tribute to late Pramukh Swami Maharaj on his birth anniversary. Pramukh Swami Maharaj was the guru and Pramukh, or president, of the BAPS. Amit Shah shared that whenever any difficulty came in his life it was Pramukh Swami Maharaj who was the first to call him to assure that everything will be fine with the blessings of God.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj motivated lakhs, guided people for result-oriented work and motivated everyone. He stressed on values and gave us Parivar Sabha. There is unity and peace in families who follow Parivar Sabha,” he stressed. BAPS describes itself as a “worldwide Hindu organization dedicated to the collective spiritual and social progress of society by promoting harmony”.

Meanwhile, PM Modi said that when “service is done in an organised form with lakhs of workers as an institution, then amazing results are achieved”. “Such kind of institutional service has the potential to solve major problems and eradicate many evils of the society and the country. When lakhs of workers are connected with a common purpose, it can transform as a great strength of the country and society. Today when the country is moving ahead with the goal of a developed India, people are coming together and the spirit of doing something big is seen in every field,” he asserted.

In his address to the BAPS volunteers, he urged them to “choose one issue every year and resolve to work for the cause throughout the year with full dedication”. “You can choose from natural farming, spreading the feeling of unity in diversity, fight against drug abuse to protect the youth, reviving the rivers or sustainable lifestyle to save the future of the earth,” he added.

“I urge the volunteers to prove the authenticity and impact of the vision of Mission LiFE (India-led pro-planed mass movement). You can participate and accelerate campaigns like ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, ‘Fit India’, ‘Vocal for Local’, promoting millets that accelerate India’s development. Youth will give their ideas and prepare the outline of their contribution to fulfill the resolve of developed India during the ‘Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue’ to be organised in January 2025. All the young volunteers can participate in it,” the PM urged.

Asserting that India is working towards the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, he said that the journey of the country for the next 25 years is as important for India as it is for every BAPS worker.

PM Modi said that he had the opportunity to join BAPS and its volunteers on multiple occasions, including after the devastation caused by the earthquake in Bhuj, floods in Kerala, and even during the recent pandemic. The Prime Minister also narrated how BAPS workers helped the government and people who were evacuated from Ukraine to Poland when the hostilities of war increased in Ukraine. He lauded them for their swift organisation of bringing together thousands of BAPS workers from all over Europe overnight and helping the large number of Indians who were reaching Poland.

Shah too lauded BAPS for its organisational achievements. Shah said that having risen from a booth president to the national president of a political party, he knows how difficult it is to organise.

Adding that the BAPS temples were the cultural reflection of India, PM Modi remarked that they were the centers of world’s oldest living culture.
