A section of the perimeter wall of the Rajkot International Airport (RIA) collapsed as torrential rain continued to batter Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat for the fourth consecutive day Thursday damaging highways, power infrastructure and requiring evacuation of thousands of people.
“A section of the perimeter wall of the airport collapsed during excessively heavy rainfall. However, that has not affected operations of the airport. All flights are operating as per schedule,” RIA director Diganta Borah told The Indian Express.
Videos and photos showing a section of perimeter wall across an outlet of a stream flowing from the airport had gone viral on Tuesday as the city was pounded by 17 inches of rain during 48 hours ending at 6 am Wednesday .The incident comes around two months after a portion of a canopy of the passenger pick-and-drop area of RIA’s temporary terminal collapsed amid heavy rainfall on June 29.
