Patkar wants SIT to investigate 2002 attack on her

Activist Medha Patkar on Monday moved an application in the metropolitan court here requesting the formation of a special investigation team to probe afresh the attack on her at Sabarmati Ashram in March 2002 when she and others had gathered there in protest against the post-Godhra riots.

Activist Medha Patkar on Monday moved an application in the metropolitan court here requesting the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe afresh the attack on her at Sabarmati Ashram in March 2002 when she and others had gathered there in protest against the post-Godhra riots.

Appearing before the court,Patkar alleged bias in the probe carried out by the police and said their chargesheet was full of loopholes.

On March 7,2002,Patkar and other social activists and mediapersons had gathered at the Sabarmati Ashram to condemn the riots when they were allegedly attacked. Following the incident,Patkar had lodged an FIR with Sabarmati police station.

According to Patkar, the chargesheet filed by police did not include crucial evidence such as pictures and the video footage of the incident that were captured by the media. She has also alleged that the police didn’t take into account statements and medical certificates of mediapersons injured in the attack and hospitalised nor did they collect statements of the meeting’s organisers, including that of danseuse Mallika Sarabhai and social activist Girish Patel.

Patkar also alleged that

the names of eight people mentioned by the witnesses were not included in the chargesheet.

The accused in the case include BJP’s Amit Shah, who is a former mayor of Ahmedabad city.

The metropolitan magistrate posted the matter for the next hearing on July 7.
