The Congress party has deputed panchayat leaders and MLAs to garner support for the candidates who contest the Panchmahal District Milk Cooperative Union Ltd or Panchamrut dairy election scheduled for October 24.

The tribal belt has been the Congress stronghold for years now. However, the party did not perform well in the dairy elections last year.

But following three consecutive wins in the dairy cooperative elections this year — Amul,Madhur and Baroda dairy — the party leaders and candidates are confident to win the election.

Local Panchmahal leaders met today to discuss the strategy for the elections. “I cannot divulge the details but we discussed how to garner support for the upcoming polls. We have asked the MLAs and panchayat leaders to back the candidates,” said Godhra MLA C K Raulji.

He added,“Seven MLAs and two panchayat leaders will be going with the candidates to meet the milk society heads in the villages.”

The district Congress president P M Patel along with panchayat leaders Govind Patel and Hirabhai Patel will support the Congress candidates in the panel. Apart from them,Congress MLAs will also ask people to vote for their candidate. “We don’t have known faces like the BJP,so we need some support from the party cadres as well,” Raulji added.

This time, the Congress has fielded three women candidates along with 12 men. The Congress panel, which fared poorly in the last Panchamrut dairy elections by winning only 2 seats of the total 15,is looking for a better tally this time.

About 1,080 voters will elect the 15-member board of the dairy. Each milk society under the dairy will send in one voter to the polling booth as their representative. Panchamrut dairy will have a three-angled election this time as the two BJP factions led by former MP Bhupendrasinh Solanki and present BJP MLA Jetha Bharwad would fight against each other.
