More than 3,000 students in Gujarat died by suicide between 2017 and 2021, Congress’s state unit said on Tuesday.
“Figures of suicide by students show 35 students end their lives every day for different reasons in the country. In premium institutes, including the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) and National Institute of Technology (NIT), and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a total of 103 students have died by suicide,” Manish Doshi, party’s state spokesperson, said in Ahmedabad.
“Gujarat falls at the sixth or seventh spot among states with regards to suicides among students. Caste, regional, and gender differences are the biggest reasons for suicide in the premier institutes. The burden of curriculum, fear of examinations, and students not living up to the expectations of parents are some of the other reasons,” he added.
In 2022, seven medical students died by suicide in Gujarat, Doshi said. Factors such as a reduction in the number of job opportunities, expensive education, and poor counseling facilities have been pushing students towards taking the step, he added.
