For the first time the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has replaced the teaching staff from invigilation duty and replaced them with non-teaching staff.
Now the District Education Officer is conducting a training programme for the 38-squad members and 20 observers on the method of invigilation and handling of cheating incidents.
The non-teaching members include Class I and Class II officers especially chosen by the district collector for invigilation purpose. The officials belong to different departments like irrigation, agriculture and forestry among others. The district collector and the DEO will head the squad, while a mamlatdar will head the team of observers.
The training was meted out to the squad and observer members, keeping in mind their debut as invigilators in the forthcoming board examinations.
According to the officials, the selection of non-teaching staff in the invigilation team was essential to curb down the rising incidents of cheating and copying at the examination centres. Over 58 members in Vadodara underwent the training on the mode of inspection for the Class X and XII examination. They were also taught ways to identify students making an attempt to cheat, copy or use illegal means at the examinations. The students will be thoroughly checked before entering the examination hall and any illegal attempts to garner marks will be closely monitored.
The training also took into account the subsequent measure the officials should take while taking action against students held for cheating.
R K Patel, the DEO of Vadodara, said: The training was kept not just to train the squad on the mode of ensuring vigilance during the examination, but to act upon the student caught without disturbing others in the class.
He added: The squad should be able to identify students who stand suspicious of using illegal modes, and should act against them without harassing them or the others.
The training included the process in which the checking should be carried out and the format in which the supervisors should file the case against the student held for copying.
The invigilating squad should silently ask the student to step out of the class and register his/her statement, while the block supervisor and the invigilating officer will file the case, said Patel.
