The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) announced that the construction of 16 out of 21 river bridges on the 352-km stretch of Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR), known as bullet train, in Gujarat is now complete. The latest milestone achieved is the river bridge over the Daman Ganga river in Valsad district.

On Tuesday, NHSRCL said that the 360-meter-long bridge over Daman Ganga river is the fifth and the last to be completed in Valsad district. NHSRCL said, “The bridge, located between Boisar and Vapi bullet train stations consists of nine Full Span Girders of 40 meters each. The height of the piers ranges from 19 to 29 metres and consists of one circular pier of 4 metres, one of 5 metres and eight of 5.5 metres diameter…”

The NHSRCL said that the Daman Ganga river bridge is the 16th to be completed out of the planned 21 river bridges in Gujarat for the project.

“All five river bridges located in Valsad district have now been completed. In total, 25 river bridges are being constructed along the entire corridor (508 kilometers)… The initial design had provided for 20 river bridges on the Gujarat stretch but later, a requirement was felt for a stretch in Vadodara city over the Vishwamitri river to be turned into a river bridge instead of the original design alignment. Hence, the total number of bridges in Gujarat is now 21…” an NHSRCL spokesperson told The Indian Express.

Previously, the Darotha river bridge had already been completed between Boisar and Vapi stations.

In Valsad district, the river bridges completed are Auranga (320 m), Par (320 m), Kolak (160 m) and Darotha (80 m). “The MAHSR alignment in Valsad district is approximately 56 km (including 4.3 km in Dadra & Nagar Haveli) starting from Zaroli village and ending at Vaghaldara village. The alignment includes Vapi bullet train station, a tunnel of 350 m, five river bridges and one PSC bridge (210 m),” according to the statement.

Among the 21 bridges is also the 1.4-kilometre bridge over the Narmada river — the longest on the stretch in Gujarat with 25 well foundation piers — five piers are deeper than 70 meters, of which four, surpass the 72.5 meter height of the Qutub Minar in Delhi, according to the statement.

The longest bridge in the entire course of the 508 kilometres is the 2.4-kilometer bridge over Vaitarna river in Maharashtra. The Daman Ganga river originates from Sahyadri hills near Valveri village of Nasik district in Maharashtra. It flows for about 131 kilometers, passing through Maharashtra, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman before draining into the Arabian Sea.

The river is a crucial source of water for drinking, irrigation, and industrial use. Industrial towns such as Vapi, Dadra and Silvassa are situated on its banks. The Madhuban Dam, built on the river, is a major water resource project that benefits Gujarat, DNH and Daman & Diu, providing water for irrigation, water supply, and power generation, according to the statement.
