New body for tech education may step into GTU domain

The society is be headed by commissioner,technical education.

Officials in the state education and technical education department say the society being set up has the same objectives as GTU.

According to them,the basic objectives outlined for the society are to work for qualitative improvement in technical and professional education,campus recruitment,arranging academia-industry interaction,entrepreneurship development programmes as also taking care of admission to technical and professional courses like BE,ME,B Pharma,M Pharma,MBA and MCA.

Officials say while the procedure for admissions was being handled by the admission committee for professional courses (ACPC),GTU was handling the rest,besides developing new curriculum as per the needs of industry and conducting examinations.

A senior official said GTU had already set up seven “sankuls(divisions)” to promote interaction between engineering institutes and local industries across the state,set up infrastructure for campus recruitment,organising training programmes for faculty development and providing training to faculties across the state to file patents for their innovations,among other things.

The official said the technical education department had not been able to handle faculty recruitment in the state’s 16 degree engineering colleges and 26 diploma colleges. More than 40 per cent of the faculty posts in technical institutes have been lying vacant for long and the only victim is the quality of teaching,he said,while expressing doubts about the ability of the same department to run the new society.

The official said it would be just another society like Gujarat Knowledge Society,Gujarat Knowledge Consortium and SCOPE (Society for Creation of Opportunity through Proficiency in English) to accommodate one more IAS officer.

Technical Education Commissioner T Natarajan,however,denied it would overlap the GTU and ACPC’s jurisdiction.

He,however,evaded a reply when asked how the society would be able to achieve its objectives when the technical education directorate under him had failed to provide even faculty and infrastructure in government technical institutes.
