The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the alleged case of malpractice in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) held at the Jay Jalaram School in Godhra’s Parvadi village, Gujarat, on May 5, arrested Dixit Patel, the Chairman of the Jay Jalaram Schools on Saturday.

The CBI, on Sunday, approached the Panchmahal district court to seek remand of Patel in the case. However, the court turned down the application stating that the case fell in the jurisdiction of the Special CBI Court, prompting the CBI to approach the Special CBI court in Ahmedabad.

The CBI arrested Dixit Patel late on Saturday, hours after the Panchmahal district court granted four days remand of four accused — Tushar Bhatt, Purshottam Sharma, Vibhor Anand and Arif Vora – who were earlier arrested by the Godhra Taluka police station in the FIR lodged on May 8 by the District Education Officer of Panchmahal.

The CBI had recorded the statement of Patel, who is the Chairman of the Jay Jalaram Schools, on June 27, when it visited the two centres run by the same trust — in Parvadi in Godhra and in Padal (Thermal) in Kheda district.

Officials in Panchmahal said that the CBI, which is interrogating the four accused in remand at the Godhra circuit house, had arrested Patel late on Saturday night and completed the formalities of the medical check up at Godhra civil hospital.

In its remand application, the CBI has said that Patel is suspected of “being in touch with the accused, who have been earlier in the case, and was in the know” of the malpractice. Patel is the sixth accused to be arrested in the NEET-UG malpractice at the Godhra Centre. The CBI had not sought custody of the fifth arrested accused — Parshuram Roy, an immigration agent and owner of Roy Overseas.

On Thursday, the CBI had recorded statements of at least six local students of Gujarat, who had approached the accused for alleged malpractice in the NEET exam at the centre. The CBI also recorded statements of the school owner Dixit Patel as well as other staff of the school in Godhra and its second school in Padal in Kheda district.

On Wednesday, a special CBI team visited two private schools as a part of their investigation into the alleged NEET-UG irregularities on May 5 – a nationwide entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission in UG medical programmes.

They visited Jay Jalaram School in Godhra’s Parvadi village and the other one in Kheda district’s Padal – about 115 kilometre from Godhra – which was another NEET-UG exam centre in the state. Both the schools are owned by Dixit Patel.
