Naxalites from Chhattisgarh held in Surat

In a joint operation,the local crime branch sleuths and the Chhattisgarh Police raided a house at Hazira in Surat on Friday and arrested five persons,including two women,who are believed to be naxalites from Chhattisgarh.

In a joint operation,the local crime branch sleuths and the Chhattisgarh Police raided a house at Hazira in Surat on Friday and arrested five persons,including two women,who are believed to be naxalites from Chhattisgarh.

They had been living in Surat for the last five months as casual labourers,but are believed to be sleeping cell members.

The Chhattisgarh Police had recently conducted raids in Dhantari district and arrested a few naxalites involved in various crimes.

During investigation,the police found that some of the naxalites had escaped and settled in Surat.

Acting on the information,a team of the Chhattisgarh Police came to Surat,and with the help of the Surat crime branch,conducted secret operations at several places in Hazira on Friday.

Amid great difficulty,the police managed to arrest the five persons on Friday.

Those arrested have been identified as Arjun alias Chetu Yadav,Suraj Gaud,Jankuram Gaud,Chanda Gaud,Sumitra Gaud,all residents of Narayanpur village in Chhattisgarh. They were later brought to the crime branch office where they were interrogated jointly.

The Chhattisgarh Police team left Surat city on Saturday with the accused.

Surat Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Subhash Trivedi said: “All those arrested confessed to have been involved in attacks on the

police during 2006,2007 and 2008. They were staying in Surat. We have found that they were working as temporary labourers. We are trying to identify all those people who are staying in the Hazira area and have naxalite links.

We don’t want to take any chance and will investigate the incident.”
