My brother killed for refusing to pay bribe: Complainant

Hiralal Shiyal, complainant in the Jasu Shiyal encounter case, has now alleged that his brother was killed after he refused to pay a bribe demanded by IPS officer Satish Verma, the then Porbandar Superintendent of Police.

Hiralal Shiyal, complainant in the Jasu Shiyal encounter case, has now alleged that his brother was killed after he refused to pay a bribe demanded by IPS officer Satish Verma, the then Porbandar Superintendent of Police.

Hiralal reportedly told this to the Special Investigation Team — headed by Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Shivanand Jha — which had been camping in Porbandar since Tuesday.

The SIT also reconstructed the encounter of Shiyal.

The SIT was formed by the Director General of Police following Gujarat High Court orders to investigate three murders reported in 1996-97.

The two other incidents include ‘murder’ of one Ranmal Ram in an alleged fake encounter at Kalyanpur in neighbouring Jamnagar district while the third man,Narayan Jetsi Bandhiya, was found hanging from a tree outside a police station in Kutiyana while he was under remand, according to the complaint.

“My brother was killed when Verma’s demand of a big amount for not killing Jasu was not met,” Hiralal told The Indian Express on Wednesday.

Hiralal, whose plea in the HC led to a fresh investigation, said he gave this information to the SIT today, adding that he would furnish more details in this regard to the probe team when it will record his statements formally.

Sources confirmed that SIT members met Hiralal and they would record his statement later.
