MSU to have ONGC Chair,will promote interface between industry and academics

For the first time,the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has selected Gujarat to institute an ONGC chair at the M S Universitys Department of Geology in order to enhance research activities in exploration of oil and natural gases in the state.

For the first time,the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has selected Gujarat to institute an ONGC chair at the M S Universitys Department of Geology in order to enhance research activities in exploration of oil and natural gases in the state.

The university signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ONGC on Tuesday to begin the interface. While M S University will be the tenth institute in the country to have an ONGC chair,it would be,however,the first chair for the Faculty of Science.

While signing the MoU,Tarun Chakraborty,head of Keshava Deva Malaviya Institute of Petroleum Exploration (KDMIPE),Dehradun,said: ONGC has had high considerations for industry-academic interface to gain more knowledge and continuous improvement in the world of cutting edge technology in the oil and gas sector.

For the further functioning of the interface,the ONGC has also given Rs 50 lakh to the university. The interface will have researches,trainings,seminars and workshops in the sector of petroleum. The whole functioning will further be periodically reviewed on its progress, said Chakraborty.

The Department of Geology has rolled out its first batch of students of Petroleum Geology last year. The course deals with the upstream exploration. Only 30 to 40 per cent of the reserves are tapped and this field depends on enhanced recovery. With this interface,the students will take up research projects under the guidance of the chairperson. The students will also get technical support and laboratory facility from the ONGC who will later use the findings for their commercial purpose, said Nikhil Desai,Dean of Faculty of Science.
