The department of Botany of M S University (MSU) has come out with a detailed booklet on rare medicinal plants available at Dhanvantari, the residence of the university vice-chancellor.

The booklet has been specifically compiled to commemorate the unveiling of the statue of Lord Dhanvantari-the physician of the Gods according to Hindu mythology- in the university campus on Thursday.

Once upon a time, the house was the official residence of the royal physician of the erstwhile princely state of Baroda. But this is the first time that the plants have been catalogued since the time they were planted during the Gaekwad era. The booklet will have details of all the 161 medicinal plants recognised by the department.

“The booklet has the scientific name of every plant along with the medicinal usage of each species,” said Daniel M,senior professor of the department.

Apart from the booklet, the Botany department has also labelled all the trees in the garden. “This way,we can keep a record of the plants. We have also involved all the students in compiling this booklet. Now,Vice-Chancellor Prof Ramesh Goyal has also asked for an illustrated book of the medicinal plants, which we will soon be working on,” said Professor Daniel.

The booklet will be given to all the visitors present in the function.
