Moved by ‘poor’ boy fighting for a seat in GNLU,ex-judge gives him a roof

Donnie Ashok,a 20-year-old boy from rural West Bengal who could not clear his Class XII examination due to paucity of money,is fighting a legal battle at the Gujarat High Court to re-affirm his admission at the Gujarat National Law University.

Donnie Ashok,a 20-year-old boy from rural West Bengal who could not clear his Class XII examination due to paucity of money,is fighting a legal battle at the Gujarat High Court (HC) to re-affirm his admission at the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU).

Touched by his story,an Ahmedabad-based retired judge, who wants to remain anonymous, has provided him shelter at his residence.

Donnie had secured a rank of 427 out of 23,881 students who took the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) in 2012 and was granted admission at the GNLU. A charity organisation had promised to sponsor the college fee. However, the university authorities decided to revoke his admission on the ground that only those students can be admitted who have cleared their Class XII examination at first attempt.

Donnie had challenged this decision at the HC and the court has granted him interim relief and asked the university authorities to reserve a seat for him till the final decision on the petition.

According to Donnie, the school he was studying in cancelled his admission in 2010-11 because he was not able to pay the fees.

Later,he appeared for an open examination which was conducted by a charity initiative, Increasing Diversity to Increase Access (IDIA). The IDIA conducts an open aptitude test for underprivileged students and offers them financial help on the basis of their results in the aptitude test.

Donnie topped the exam and he was re-admitted to his school two months before the board exams. However, due to the short time of two months,he could not clear the examination. He cleared the Class XII exams the following year and appeared for the CLAT and obtained a seat at the GNLU.
