A woman was arrested by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Tuesday for allegedly selling her three-month-old daughter to another woman at Visakhapatnam last December. A mother of six, accused Gudiya Khan (37), was sent to police custody till June 29 by a court on Wednesday.
The matter came to light when the crime branch arrested five women in Mumbai recently while probing inter-state child trafficking cases. According to the police, during questioning, one of the arrested women, Reena, said that Khan had sold her daughter to a woman named Vishala Venkatesh in Visakhapatnam.
Following this, crime branch officials reached Visakhapatnam and got custody of the child. The police also recorded Vishala’s statement that threw more light on the racket.
The crime branch team reached Vapi and arrested Gudiya on Tuesday. She was then taken to Mumbai, when a DNA test confirmed that the infant was hers, Inspector Dilip Tejankar told The Indian Express.
He added that though Khan has claimed all the six children belong to her, DNA tests are to be conducted on all in the coming days to verify the same.
“While four of her six children have been sent to the Mumbai Child Welfare Committee, two, who are below two years of age, are with her,” Tejankar said.
“Gudiya stayed in temporary tents at different places in Vapi after divorcing two of her husbands, and made her children beg for survival. She came in contact with Reena during her visit to Mumbai in November 2023. On Reena’s advice, she agreed to sell her child for Rs 1.6 lakh,” he added.
