The government cites public interest and the need to safeguard the institution’s functioning and assets as primary reasons for the takeover.
A 27-year-old police constable attached to the Ankleshwar B-Division police station in Bharuch was killed in a hit-and-run near Amrutpura village on Saturday. The incident happened while he was crossing the road after ensuring an injured dog received medical treatment.
Bharuch police identified the deceased as Arvind Avhar Chaudhary, who had gone out of his way to ensure the canine received medical attention.
Police Inspector Vijay Kataria of Ankleshwar B Division police station told The Indian Express that Chaudhary, who was assigned to serve summons and warrants, was out for duty on Saturday evening.
According to Kataria, he had travelled to Amrutpura – a village under the jurisdiction of the police station, to serve summons to an accused. After he had completed his task, a local told him about an injured dog along the road divider. Chaudhary parked his motorcycle on the side to attend to the injured dog.
Kataria said, “He saw the canine had injured two of its legs in an accident that may have occurred just a short while ago… He made several attempts to seek medical help for the injured dog. An official of our police station received his last call at around 7pm as he was inquiring about medical treatment for animals. The colleague had advised him to contact an animal rescue team or mobile animal ambulance… The locals also told us that he asked around for help.”
Kataria said Chaudhary spent about an hour and a half at the spot, ensuring the canine had received medical attention and only after handing over the injured dog to the care of an animal rescue team, did he decide to leave. “Unfortunately, he was hit by a heavy vehicle just as he was crossing the road to go back to his motorcycle. He was killed on the spot… The vehicle escaped from the spot. We have launched a manhunt for the driver and are close to cracking the case.”
Kataria said Chaudhary was in his first posting as a police constable and had been attached to Ankleshwar B-Division police station since the last two years. Remembering Chaudhary as a “sincere and hardworking” police constable, Kataria said Chaudhary had recently been married and was “looking forward to a bright future”.
This is the second such hit-and-run in the district in less than a month. Earlier, on October 17, another police constable was killed in a case of hit-and-run on the National Highway 48 near Panoli.
