The Congress on Thursday demanded that drivers and other staff members of tipper vans that collect garbage from households in Rajkot city be paid minimum wages.
Gujarat Congress working president Jignesh Mevani and local leaders submitted a memorandum to the office of the Rajkot collector, saying tipper van drivers and persons riding such vans are not being paid minimum wages as per law.
“They are not given salary slips and are also exploited in violation of labour laws,” Mevani, the MLA from Vadgam, stated in the memorandum. “These workers keep Rajkot clean and shining… We demand that the labour department and Rajkot Municipal Corporation be directed to pay them minimum wages… give salary slips, and PF be credited (in their PF accounts),” he added.
Mevani further said that street vendors, who sell their wares at the weekly Sunday market near Aji Dam, have been served eviction notices by the irrigation department, warning them of action under land grabbing Act. He demanded they should not be evicted from the spot till alternate arrangements are made.
