A man allegedly shot his estranged wife three times in the head before turning his licenced weapon on his head killing himself in Rajkot on Saturday morning, police said.
The incident took place about 9 am on Saturday when Lalji Ramesh Padhiyar went to the building to meet his wife Trusha, who was separated from him and living with her female friend.
He allegedly called her downstairs and engaged in an altercation, before pulling out a pistol and shooting her three times in the head. He then allegedly shot himself dead, DCP (Crime) Jagdish Bangarwa of Rajkot City Police said.
An FIR was filed at Gandhigram police station on the basis of a complaint filed by Trusha’s brother Jay Mukesh Rathod against his deceased brother-in-law Lalji Padhiyar, who was booked under the BNS section for attempt to murder as well as under the Arms Act and the Gujarat Police Act.
According to the FIR, one-and-a-half months ago, Trusha and Padhiyar had fought over her alleged extramarital affair and since then, she had been living with her friend, Pooja.
On November 14, Padhiyar called Rathod to his home and both of them, along with the couple’s son, went to Pooja’s house to speak to Trusha at 11 pm. However, the discussions failed and the three returned to Lalji’s home.
About 9 am Saturday, Rathod woke up to loud banging on the front door of the house. When he opened the door, a neighbour told him that Lalji and Trusha were having a heated argument below Pooja’s building, the FIR said.
The FIR stated that by the time Rathod reached the spot, there was a huge crowd and he saw Padhiyar lying on the ground with a pistol next to his leg. Bystanders told him that Padhiyar had shot Trusha before turning the gun on him. When the 108 ambulance arrived, the paramedics declared Padhiyar dead. Trusha was alive and she was taken to Rajkot Civil Hospital. Later, she was shifted to a private hospital.
DCP Jagdish Bangarwa said that Padhiyar’s body had been sent for postmortem and the pistol, live cartridges and bullets had been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
