The Ahmedabad district court on Tuesday convicted an accused for abetting the suicide of his wife. District judge R N Malik sentenced Amit Saytendralal Sharma (32) to five years imprisonment. Sharma has also been accused of demanding dowry from his wife.
According to the prosecution,Sashibala,a schoolteacher with DPS Ahmedabad, committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of her residential building,Goyal Intercity,in Thaltej due to the alleged harassment by her in-laws.
Amit had been demanding dowry from her ever since her marriage on October 26,2001 and had been subjecting her to mental and physical harassment. The prosecution said that Amit wanted to sell the plot he was given by his in-laws,but Shashibala was against it.
Amit started harassing Shashibala, and she committed suicide on February 1,2007.
Amit worked with a private company as an assistant manager and the couple had rented the house at Goyal Intercity a couple of months prior to the incident. The accused has been charged under provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Dowry Act and the Domestic Violence Act.
Public Prosecutor Shashibhushan Sharma said: Despite being educated and from a well-to-do family, the accused was harassing his wife for dowry. We had urged the court to hand out a strict punishment. The couple have two children a four-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son.
