The Vadodara city police have arrested a 36-year-old man for the alleged murder of his 39-year-old wife over alleged fights about her job and suspicions of infidelity in the Sama area of the city. The accused, Manjitsinh Dhillon, has allegedly confessed that he strangulated his wife with a wire on the intervening night of December 12.

Police said that it was the father of Poornima Pujara who had discovered her body on the afternoon of December 12 and suspected his son-in-law as the couple allegedly had frequent fights.

According to the complaint lodged by Poornima’s father Shreedhar, Poornima, a computer operator at a private company, had married Dhillon, a truck driver, about three years ago. The accused lived with Poornima’s family in Defence Colony in Sama. “On the night of December 11, (Dhillon) had arrived at around 1 am and I had opened the door for him. He went to their (Poornima’s) room to sleep. The next morning, I woke up and left for work as usual but when I returned for lunch in the afternoon, no meal had been cooked. When I went to check on Poornima, I found her sleeping on the bed and unresponsive,” the FIR stated.

Poornima’s father said he then “called his daughter and son”, who “immediately” sent over friends to help. Poornima was rushed to SSG hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Police said Dhillon had allegedly also taken Poornima’s ornaments, including her gold mangalsutra, earrings, and bangles.

Assistant Commissioner Police, H Division, GB Bhabhaniya told The Indian Express that Dhillon was arrested on Saturday and remanded to three days in police custody by a local court on Sunday. Bhabhaniya said, “During the investigation so far, it is clear that he killed her out of his suspicion. There seems to be no other motive. He took away the ornaments as he wanted to escape… He had gone away to Gandhidham and we enticed him to return by telling his family to convey a message that Poornima had survived… The accused travelled very often.”
