Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani on Wednesday sought that the government should register offences in cases where Dalits have been allotted land parcels under Gujarat Agriculture Land Ceiling Act, but the same remain illegally encroached upon by non-Dalits.
Speaking in the Assembly during discussion on budgetary demands of the Home department, Mevani said that many from the Dalit community have made over 250 representations to the state authorities maintaining that around 4,000 acre of such land parcels in Banaskantha and Kutch districts stand illegally encroached upon.
Mevani further said that he himself has represented the matter on behalf of applicants to the government 15 to 20 times. He requested that cognizance be taken of those representations and cases be registered for illegal encroachment against concerned persons under Indian Penal Code, Scheduled Caste & Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Gujarat Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act.
He also said that preventive measures should be taken by the police to ensure that the land allottees do not suffer loss of life or property in case they go on their own to take possession of the illegally encroached land.
