Members of Karnataka Sangha, a registered group of people from the southern state who are residing in Gujarat, have sought the construction of a Karnataka Bhavan in Ahmedabad, on the lines of a similar building in Delhi.
A request in this regard was recently made by the group to the government of Karnataka.
A memorandum in this regard was handed over to the Chairman of Karnataka State Bioenergy Development Board, S E Sudheendra, who was in Ahmedabad to participate in the national convention of the Congress. Sudheendra was also felicitated by the Sangha.
President of Karnataka Sangha in Ahmedabad, Hanamant Bennur, told The Indian Express that theirs is a registered group established in 1946. “The organisation is carrying out various activities for the community in Gujarat and to facilitate it in a better way, they have sought to build a Karnataka Bhavan in Ahmedabad,” he added.
Bennur said that it was a long-standing demand that a plot of land be given by the government of Gujarat where the government of Karnataka should build the Bhavan.
“For this, the Gujarat government had put forth a requirement that we get a letter from the Karnataka government to authorise us as an organisation,” he said.
“He (Sudheendra) has assured us that he will personally see to it that our demand is met,” Bennur said, adding that currently, around four lakh people of Karnataka are living in Gujarat.
