In hit-and-run case, son of ex-district panchayat chief among two arrested’

Two men were arrested on Saturday in Vadodara hours after an elderly man died in a hit-and-run case, police said. Rajesh Patel and his wife Reshma were out for a walk on Friday night when an SUV rammed the couple, officials added. While Rajesh died, his wife is said to be critical.
Keyur Patel, the main accused, was allegedly behind the wheel, police said. He is the son of Bharuch’s ex-district panchayat president Alpa Patel, officials added.
The accused were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident reported at Bill Canal Road.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 10 pm on Friday when Rajesh Patel and his wife Reshma had stepped out for a post-dinner walk from Bhaili main road towards the Bill Canal Road.

Rajesh and Reshma were rushed to a hospital after suffering serious injuries where Rajesh breathed his last while Reshma is said to be critical.
On confiscating the SUV, police came across a VIP plate stating “President Bharuch District Panchayat”.
A probe to ascertain the credentials of the accused revealed that his mother was the president of the Bharuch district panchayat until the term that ended in September when the ruling BJP elected another leader for the second half of the half-year term, officials aware of the details said.
The Manjalpur police station has booked the accused under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections for culpable homicide not amounting to murder (304), rash and negligent driving (279), causing hurt to any person by doing any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life (337, 338) and crime committed in presence of abettor (114).
