Primary teachers in the state have a hectic time ahead with the Gunotsav– a quality evaluation drive– scheduled to begin next month. The performance of the teachers will be judged on the basis of that of their students.
R P Gupta,Secretary,Primary Education, said this year’s programme will be stricter and that ashram shalas will be included in the purview. Surprise inspections will be part of the programme like last year; but this time, teachers will be evaluated on the basis of the performance of their students. This programme was started by the state Education department during November,2009 with an aim to evaluate primary education scenario and grade school teachers accordingly.
When the programme first began in November last year, all schoolteachers were asked to do self-appraisal.
Last November, only 25 per cent schools were covered under the programme and inspections were carried out by Central Class I officers. The names of all the schools to be part of the survey had been predeclared. This time, however, there wont be any prior announcement; civil servants will pay surprise visits to every school, said Gupta.
The officer further said that unlike last year, when only a few languages and mathematics were taken into account, this year, all subjects will be considered.
The government officers will be given 12 schools at random and they can pick any school. Also, the teachers rated themselves on a 10-point scale last year and had specified their targets. This time,it won’t be like that, Gupta said.
With plans afoot to appoint 10,000 vidya sahayaks following the state government decision to merge class VIII with primary schools,an additional 5,000 classrooms will be constructed. The constructions will be replete with boundary walls, tables and benches and toilets, said Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan officials.
We recently had a chintan shibir with district primary education officials across the state to identify and plug the loopholes found during the last Gunotsav. Every district has its own problems, right from migration to dropout rates , said Gupta.
In Dangs, the dropout rate is nearly 7.5 per cent, said District Primary Education Officer R K Patel. The teachers will be asked to devote additional hours after class, he added.
