Gujarat’s Banaskantha to be split; Vav-Tharad to be state’s 34th district
While the new Vav-Tharad district will comprise eight talukas and four municipalities, the new Banaskantha district will have six talukas and two municipalities.

In a significant decision, the Gujarat government on Wednesday decided to split Banaskantha district into two, carving out a new district that will be named Vav-Tharad with its headquarters at Tharad. The decision was taken at the weekly meeting of the state cabinet headed by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
With the formation of the new district, Gujarat will have 34 districts.
“Banaskantha district is the biggest in the state in terms of talukas. It is also the second biggest in terms of area. The chief minister has taken this decision in the larger public interest to ensure that people of the district get facilities easily,” senior minister and government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel said, announcing the decision.
Banaskantha district currently has 14 talukas. Of these, eight talukas, i.e. Vav, Bhabhar, Tharad, Dhanera, Suigam, Lakhni, Diodar and Kankrej, will be a part of the new Vav-Tharad district. The new district will also have four municipalities – Bhabhar, Tharad, Thara and Dhanera.
The new Banaskantha district will have six talukas, i.e. Palanpur, Danta, Amirgadh, Dantiwada, Vadgam and Deesa, and two municipalities, Palanpur and Deesa.
“Broadly, the CM has given instructions to carry out the division in such a way that each district will have 600 villages each, with Vav-Tharad having a total area of 6,257 sq km and Banaskantha having an area of 4,486 sq km,” Patel said.
An official release stated that with the division of Banaskantha district, people in villages on the side of the new Vav-Tharad district can save travelling 35-85 km to reach the district headquarters. It would also save time and fuel, the release added.
The new district will get increased funds and government grants which will result in increased infrastructure and human development services, the release further said.
Patel said that with the division of Banaskantha district, the district panchayat election will not be held till its delimitation and till the administrative workforce and offices are allotted.
