As it stopped raining on Friday morning, the flood situation eased in most districts of Saurashtra and Kutch but thousands continued to remain trapped in waterlogged areas of Mandvi, Mundra and Bhuj towns of Kutch and Dwarka in Devbhumi Dwarka.

In Mandvi town, first floors of houses in posh Babavadi, Jaynagar and Dhavalnagar as well as low-lying area of Salaya were under water. “It stopped raining after 8 am. But due to the extremely heavy rainfall in the previous 24 hours, first floors of houses in Babavadi, Jaynagar, Dhavalnagar and Salay are under water. Army, SDRF and NDRF teams are rescuing people in these areas,” said Vinod Goklani, mamlatdar of Mandvi taluka in Kutch.

Under the influence of the deep depression, Mandvi was pounded by around 16 inches of rain during 24 hours ending at 6 am on Friday.

Other talukas of the district also recorded widespread heavy rainfall. Adjoining Mundra and Abadasa taluka reported eight and six inches of rain, respectively, during this period. “Around 365 people continue to be in shelter homes in Mandvi,” Goklani added.

Following heavy rain, the historic Hamirsar lake in Bhuj town continued to overflow for the third consecutive day, flooding low-lying areas. “We have dug a canal and removed encroachment from Hamirsar lake to prevent flooding. However, Ashapuranagar, Sama Faliya, Shantinagar and Sanjaynagar are low-lying areas and prone to flooding. Therefore, floodwaters of Hamirsar have entered these areas. We have shifted around 300 people to shelter homes,” said Jigar Patel, chief officer of Bhuj Municipality.

In Mundra, more than 500 people are in shelter homes, as parts of the town and some rural areas continued to remain flooded, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Mundra, Chetan Visan, said. “The coastal Abadasa, Mandvi and Mundra talukas experienced torrential rain on Thursday, flooding many areas in these talukas. But the rain stopped on Friday morning and the flood situation is improving,” Kutch MP Vinod Chavda told The Indian Express.

He added that around 300 people have been evacuated from Jhakhau fishing harbour in Abadasa taluka as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, around 600 people continued to be in shelter homes on Friday in the temple town of Dwarka in Devbhumi Dwarka district amid flash flood, even as the taluka saw no rain since Thursday evening.

“Dwarka receives an annual average rainfall of 20 inches. But this monsoon, we have already received 85 inches of rain. Khara Talava and Ravla Talav have been overflowing. Due to excessive rainfall, water is seeping into our drainage system, flooding areas like Bhadrkali Chowk, Avalpara, Darshan Tekari and Rupen harbour, among others,” said Uday Nasit, chief officer of Dwarka Municipality.
