Gujarat: Police seize 7,800 fake notes after house raid in Banaskantha village; two held

The Banaskantha Police, on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, raided a house in Mahadeviya village of Deesa taluka and seized 7,800 fake Indian currency notes (FICN) of Rs 500 denomination, totalling to a market value of Rs 39 lakh. The personnel of the Local Crime Branch (LCB) also seized five printers and stationery from a “special room” in the house that was set up for the operation, said Banaskantha Superintendent of Police (SP) Prashant Sumbe.

The house belongs to main accused Raimal Singh who is currently absconding, while two other accused, including Sanjay Soni and Shrimali, were caught-red handed printing the fake notes, said police.

Police said that the accused had initially told them that they had begun printing the fake notes just three-four days back and were in the process of “perfecting them” so that they could pass off as facsimiles of the real bank notes.

The police are investigating whether any of these notes have been released into the market.

An FIR was filed against the three accused at Deesa Rural Police station, booking them under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 179 (using forged notes as genuine), 180 (possession of counterfeit notes), 181 (possession of instruments used in forgery), and 61 (criminal conspiracy). Further, the police added BNS sections 111(3) and 111(4) related to organised crime.

According to SP Sumbe, main accused Raimal has 16 other offences against him like extortion, prohibition and loot, and had been detained under PASA (Gujarat Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act) and released just a fortnight ago. Police are now looking to arrest him again.
The second accused, Sanjay Soni, is a partner of Singh. He has five offences like cheating and loot registered against him. The third accused is Shrimali, a local resident of Mahadeviya village.
