Gujarat NCP MLA Kandhal Jadeja arrested for rioting, court grants bail

The arrest of the MLA comes at a time when the budget session of Gujarat Assembly is in progress.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA from Gujarat, Kandhal Jadeja and seven others were arrested by police in Porbandar after they allegedly indulged  in rioting in that town late on Thursday night.  The police sought their remand for three days, but a local court trashed their application and released the MLA and others on bail.

Police said Jadeja, who is MLA from Kutiyana Assembly constituency in Porbandar district of Gujarat, and eight others indulged in rioting after one Nagesh Odedra hit the car of the MLA in Porbandar town. A furious Jadeja and his men followed Odedara to his uncle Lakha Odedra’s residence in Memanwada area. There, the MLA and eight others beat up 29-year-old Nagesh and damaged windows of Innova and Audi cars belonging to the Odedaras, police said.

The incident took place at around 10 pm and Nagesh, who is son of Kutiyana municipality president Dheliben Odedra, filed a complaint with Kirtimandir police station in this regard at 11:45 pm. Based on the complaint, Kirtimandir police booked Jadeja and others for rioting, voluntary causing hurt and criminal intimidation. Meanwhile the MLA and seven others surrendered before police hours after the incident.

The arrest of the MLA comes at a time when the budget session of Gujarat Assembly is in progress.

“When the House is in session, police require to intimate Assembly Speaker of arrest of any MLA. We have arrested Jadeja and have intimated the office of Gujarat Assembly Speaker through a fax message,” in-charge superintendent of police (SP) of Porbandar, DM Parmar told The Indian Express.

Jadeja is one of the two MLAs of NCP in Gujarat. He is also son of late godmother Santokben Jadeja. He has been booked in more than a dozen cases under Arms Act, rioting and assault. He is serving his first term as MLA from Kutiyana, a seat her late mother once represented.

Nagesh is also son of history-sheeter Malade Odedra. In his complaint, Nagesh alleged that Jadeja tried to assault him due an old dispute the complainant had with one Abha Jadeja.
