Gujarat govt to build 2 new bridges to replace old ones

The Gujarat government has approved the construction of two bridges in north Gujarat at the cost of Rs 399 crore after the lifespan of the current bridges expired, stated an official release Sunday.

The two bridges will be built on Radhanpur-Chanasma highway and Mehsana-Himmatnagar highway, it added.

The bridge on Radhanpur-Chanasma highway over the Banas river near Gochanad was built in 1965. A four-lane bridge that has been approved besides the current bridge will ease the traffic for around 40 lakh people, the release stated.

The other bridge — between Mehsana-Himmatnagar highway over the Sabarmati river near Derol village — was built in 1966. The state government has decided to replace the two-lane construction with a six-lane bridge. The move is expected to benefit around 50 lakh people.

According to the state government, Rs 113.64 crore have been allocated so far for the reconstruction of 19 bridges, Rs 166.77 crore for strengthening of 126 bridges and Rs 2,367 crore for repair of 2188 bridges, culverts and roads in the state.
