The Rajkot Rural Police Monday confirmed it fired 10 tear gas shells and carried out a lathi charge on a mob of 1,500 people in Vinchhiya village of Jasdan taluka after they allegedly resorted to violence following the police refusal to publicly parade six murder accused through the village.

A total of 52 people have been detained and are likely to be booked for rioting and under other charges, said SP Himkar Singh. Vinchhiya is located 82 km from the district headquarters of Rajkot city.

Officials said that while the FIR, filed about a week ago, had named one person and three others, the police had, in its probe, found a total of eight to be accused in the murder. Six of the eight, including the main accused, were arrested.

On Monday morning, the Vinchhiya police took the six accused to the crime scene for investigation. Subsequently, a crowd of around 1,500 persons from the village, including the victims’ relatives and others, gathered in front of the police station and allegedly demanded that the accused be publicly paraded around the village by the police.

“However, since parading the accused is an unlawful act, we absolutely refused to conduct any such procession,” said SP Singh, adding that while the cops were attempting to negotiate with the crowd, the people had become violent with several people throwing stones at the police team.

“Hence, we took action to disperse the crowd. We fired 10 tear gas shells and carried out a mild lathi charge. The situation is now stable,” the officer said.
