GU executive council polls: candidate files petition in HC

The elections of Gujarat University’s Executive Council have reached Gujarat High Court after one of the candidates for the two seats,,,

The elections of Gujarat University’s (GU) Executive Council have reached Gujarat High Court after one of the candidates for the two seats,Ranjana Harish Dwivedi, filed a petition claiming that she being the only candidate from the Arts faculty should be declared elected uncontested.

She said that the university authorities have not taken any step in this regard despite her claims.

The Division Bench of Justice M S Shah and Justice K M Thaker has issued notices to the concerned parties in this matter. Though the court did not stay the elections and has asked the university authorities not to declare the results after voting on August 30. The court has ordered to submit the ballot papers in a sealed cover in the court.

Dwivedi’s counsel Shailesh Parikh said: “For the two reserved seats for the university professors in the executive council, three persons have filed their nominations. While Dwivedi is from Arts faculty, the other two are from Science faculty. Now,as per the rules, there cannot be more than one candidate elected from a faculty. Therefore,Dwivedi is the only candidate from the Arts faculty. And so,she should be declared elected un-contested from the Arts faculty.”

“Since the GU authorities have not declared her elected uncontested saying that one of the two candidates from Science faculty actually belongs to the Arts faculty,we have filed the petition,” he added.

Parikh said the court has directed the university authorities to hold elections on August 30 and then submit the ballot papers in a sealed cover before the court.

The election’s outcome will be subject to the final order by the court on Dwivedi’s petition. The next hearing on this issue is scheduled on Monday.
