The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has invited proposals from the existing engineering colleges in its jurisdiction for setting up of five centres of excellence, with one centre proposed in each of the five zones in the state. These centres will be located within the premises of the engineering colleges. A circular sent to all the engineering colleges says that the GTU will buy laboratory equipment, recruit faculty and pay their salaries.

However, the colleges hosting the centre would have to provide the buildings, including four halls for setting up of laboratories with latest equipment, and arrange accommodation for the faculty at the campus itself. The host colleges will have the benefit of using the laboratories for their own students free of cost.
