In an attempt to keep a check over disposal of bio-medical waste by the health service providers, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has now made online registration of hospitals and clinics mandatory and has decided to create a data bank to monitor the disposal system.

The online registration of health service providers that started this month will include every detail of the hospitals and the clinics related to production and disposal of the bio-medical waste from the unit. The information to be provided by the health service providers includes detailed data on the category of the health service provider, the type of the bio-medical waste disposed, the method of disposal, the quantity of the waste disposed every day among other things.

“Although the service providers had to register themselves with the GPCB earlier as well, the online registration stresses upon the details needed to form a detailed database of the hospitals and disposal of bio-medical waste by them. This will also help us to know the scenario of the health service providers and monitor them during inspections,” said R B Trivedi, deputy engineer,GPCB.

Out of the estimated 5,000 health service providers in Vadodara district, over 2,200 are registered with the Indian Medical Association (IMA),Vadodara branch and over 1,300 of total health service providers in the district are registered with the IMA’s facility of disposal of bio-medical waste.

Chairman of the bio-medical waste cell at IMA,Dr Mayank Bhatt, said,“It is more on the health service providers’ willingness to involve themselves in proper disposal of the bio-medical waste. There are at least twice the number of medical units which still need to register themselves for the disposal and our incinerator has the capacity to dispose of three times the current quantity of the bio-medical waste.”

While IMA has its contract with the city-based incineration company Quantum Environment Engineers for disposal of the bio-medical waste supplied by the health service providers in Vadodara district, the company maintains its own manual recording system as well.

With the incorporation of online registration, the GPCB also intends to reach out to more number of health service providers for proper disposal of bio-medical waste.
