Ginning mills withdraw strike

Ginning units in the state have announced withdrawal of their strike following the lifting of the ban on cotton exports as announced by the Centre on Sunday.

Ginning units in the state have announced withdrawal of their strike following the lifting of the ban on cotton exports as announced by the Centre on Sunday.

The decision has been hailed by Congress and the All Gujarat Cotton Ginning Association. However, the announcement by Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma has removed air from the sails of protests lined up by the BJP for Monday.

The Congress has claimed credit for getting the ban revoked by saying that it was the result of its high level delegation meeting with Sharma on Sunday. All Gujarat Cotton Ginners Association president Dilipbhai Patel said the association was grateful to the Centre and all those who had supported the strike. Now he would request all members of the association to resume their operations from Monday,he added.

The revocation of the ban was announced following a meeting of a delegation comprising senior Congress led by CLP leader Shaktisinh Gohil with Sharma, who later announced the lifting of the ban.

Earlier,on Friday,a high-level delegation had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh besides the AICC President Sonia Gandhi and her political advisor Ahmed Patel. The delegation comprised GPCC in-charge Mohan Prakash and PCC chief Arjun Modhwadia and CLP leader Shaktisinh Gohil along with senior party MPs and MLAs from Gujarat.

Meanwhile, the Congress has demanded that the way Congress has taken care of the interest of farmers of Gujarat,BJP government in in the state should worry about farmers. “In Gujarat,12.40 lakh farmers are waiting for power connection. This includes farmers of dark zone area. This year only 33,000 of these farmers will be offered connection, that too, after paying heavy connection charges and fulfilling the condition of installing sprinkler and drip irrigation systems.

Gohil said the Maharanee’s government had announced a relief package worth Rs 2,000 crore for cotton growers in that state but the cotton growers had no such help. Chief Minister is prompt in writing letters to the Central Government, but he should first take decisions in the interest of farmers,Gohil said.
