Gandhinagar residents and district officials present views before Gujarat UCC committee
The meeting was among the first of the district interactions for the Uniform Civil Code committee headed by Supreme Court Justice (retd) Ranjana Desai.

Residents of Gandhinagar and officials of the district administration presented their views on marriage, divorce, sustenance, property rights, rights of women in live-in relationships, family laws based on religion and protection of inheritance rights, among other issues before the committee formed to assess the need for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat.
The meeting, held at the circuit house in Gandhinagar on Wednesday, was among the first of the district interactions for the committee headed by Supreme Court Justice (retd) Ranjana Desai, a day after the Gujarat government extended the deadline for the panel to submit its draft report by 45 days.
A government release quoted Justice (retd) Desai as saying, “The draft for the UCC will be prepared keeping in mind equality of women and children. The committee will put forth the report soon after a study of the citizens’ opinions.”
The meeting was attended by Gandhinagar Mayor Meeraben Patel, Panchayat President Shilpaben Patel, MLA Ritaben Patel, Collector Mehul Dave, Gujarat Sahitya Akademi Chairman Bhagyesh Jha, Gujarat National Law University Director S Shantakumar and Children’s University Vice-Chancellor T S Joshi, along with retired officials, lawyers, wellness coaches, social workers and others.
Justice Desai also met Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel along with other committee members: retired IAS officer C L Meena, advocate R C Kodekar, former vice-chancellor Dr Dakshesh Thakar and social worker Geeta Shroff.
This was the first meeting after the formation of the committee.
Manoj Kumar Das, additional chief secretary of the home department and additional chief secretary to the chief minister; Avantika Singh, secretary to the chief minister; and Officer on Special Duty Rakesh Vyas were also part of the meeting.
