Supporters of Rajpur councillor Mushtaq Khan Pathan attacked the residence of former mayor and Rajpur Congress councillor Himmatsinh Patel on Sunday to oppose the denial of an election ticket. They also burnt an effigy of Patel and raised slogans against him.
Patels supporters and the police foiled the attack, which Patel said was to exert pressure on the Congress to change its decision to field a replacement for Pathan.
The police booked 10 people for rioting.Patel said Pathan was replaced because of pressure from the local residents.
Pathan is not known for voicing local concerns in the AMC or VS Hospital board. The demand for change in the party candidate was gaining momentum for sometime now, said Patel,a member of the core committee, which made the final decision on ticket distribution.
Pathans supporters said Patel changed his candidature to appease a friend. The candidates brought in as replacement were not known in the ward, they said, adding that Patel was creating discord among candidates by pitting them against each other.
