The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell has arrested a 43-year-old man from Bihar for allegedly placing newspaper advertisements of overseas jobs on behalf of a fake travel firm to mislead people and cheating them to the tune of Rs 22.4 lakh.
The accused Ansarul Haque alias Munna Chauhan, a resident of Motihari town in Bihar, was arrested from Ladaur village on September 6, the police said. According to an official statement, Chauhan hatched a “pre-planned criminal conspiracy” with the other accused, namely, Mushtaq Ansari, Dinesh Yadav and Vidya Sagar. They posted fake advertisements under S.D. Tours and Travels to entice people for jobs as drivers, workers and helpers for Gill, a construction company based in Cambodia.
“The accused used to target lower-middle class people and provide false advertisements of a company abroad and take their passports to promise them false jobs with fake work visas and appointment letters. Currently, we have detained Mushtaq while Dinesh and Vidhya are on the run,” said M R Paradva, Investigating Officer at Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell told The Indian Express.
Following the arrest, a transit warrant of three days was obtained and Chauhan was brought to Ahmedabad on September 9. He was presented before the magistrate court that sent him to a five-day remand until Wednesday.
According to the police, the accused committed the crime for six months from November 2022 till April this year in Ahmedabad by having an office under a false company name. By giving advertisements of low-cost but with high salary returns, they gained the trust of the people and received huge sums of money from them, the police said.
The accused has been charged under IPC 406 (criminal breach of trust),420 (cheating), 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) and sections 66 (C) (identity theft), 66 (E) (violating someone’s privacy) of the IT Act.
