The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested a structural engineer from Saudagar ni Pol of Kalupur in connection with the building collapse that killed five persons on January 28.
The accused was identified as Anwar Subehkhan Pathan (46) of Dhalgarwad in Ahmedabad, who was reportedly absconding after the incident.
The Crime Branch officers said Pathan was working as an engineer on the project with builders Munaf,Salim and Hanif Bata, who are all in judicial custody.
Pathan had designed five stories of the building, the police said. He was reportedly told by the builders to design extended balconies on the third and fourth floors, which allegedly led to the collapse of the under-construction building.
The builders were putting up a one-room-kitchen structure in the building.
Crime Branch Inspector D D Damor said,We are questioning him further on the faulty design plan and why he designed the building with balconies in a congested bylane. These builders had not even informed the AMC about the construction of the building and had taken no approval for it. We are interrogating the two town planning officials who were suspended by AMC.
Pathan was reportedly found near his house in Dhalgarwad on Saturday. Acting on a tip-off,the Crime Branch apprehended him. The police are investigating the roles of other designers and architects who worked with him on the project.
