Rajkot civic body says samples sent for test, preliminary report suggests no contamination
Water in the Nyari-I Dam has been reportedly contaminated due to the inflow of industrial effluent from the nearby area.
The dam is one of the major sources of water for Rajkot city and municipal corporation draws over 50 lakh gallons per day to supply water to the new part of the city, which consists of three wards.
Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) officials said samples have sent for test, but preliminary results show no sign of contamination.
The corporation is still drawing water from the dam.
RMC Additional City Engineer M R Kamaliya said: There have been complaints of water contamination in the Nyari river from residents of Dholra village, which is located on the bank. The test reports are awaited; they normally come in 7-10 days.
Villagers have, however, complained that effluents released from chemical and other plastic factories in Shapar-Veraval have contaminated the water, which has turned reddish. Foam can be seen on the banks of Nyari river, indicating the presence of chemicals, they said.
From Ribada, the river passes from Sapar-Veraval,Dholra,Pal and Kangshiyala.
