The directorate of technical education (DTE) recruited 410 lecturers for government polytechnic colleges and 77 assistant professors for 16 government degree engineering colleges in the state last week.
Deputy director (administration) V S Purani said the recruitments had been on contractual basis to ensure that studies of the students did not suffer due to lack of faculties. The total number of vacancies in polytechnic colleges is 174 and 496 in degree colleges.
He said that all the recruitments were done for a period of 11 months months, with a consolidated salary of Rs 25,000 to polytechnic lecturers and Rs 30,000 for degree engineering college professors.
The regular recruitment,he said, would be made through the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC). Those recruited on contract would be made permanent only if they clear the recruitment examinations and interview conducted by the GPSC.
Purani said that DTE had sent the requisition to GPSC regarding the number of vacancies in engineering and polytechnic colleges and the educational qualification of the candidates required.
