Nearly 600 resident doctors at the New Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad called off their strike on Wednesday after the state government promised to look into their demands of enhancing security at the hospital.

On Tuesday, the doctors had gone on a strike after relatives of a patient accused three junior doctors of molestation. The Shahibaug police are investigating all aspects of allegations and counter-allegations where doctors not only pleaded innocence but accused “outside elements” of attacking them.

Junior Doctor Association president Dr Rajesh Damor said after Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas and Principal Secretary Rajesh Kishore intervened, the doctors called off the strike. He said the government will be setting up a committee, which will suggest steps to improve doctors’ security, especially when relatives of patients attack them alleging negligence. The committee will submit its report at the earliest,he added.
