Doctor in Surat dies of pneumonia, family alleges he was harassed by seniors while he was ill; internal probe ordered
Rajendra Ramani was a postgraduate student at Government Medical College. He was also deployed at the surgery ward of the New Civil Hospital.

An internal probe has been ordered at the Government Medical College in Surat after a postgraduate medical student, 26, died of pneumonia at a private hospital on Monday.
The family of Dr Rajendra Ramani, the deceased student, alleged that he was harassed by seniors and he continued to slog even when he was seriously ill.
Dr Rajendra’s father Dinesh Ramani on Tuesday met Dr Nimesh Verma, in-charge dean, GMC, and handed over a complaint letter, alleging that the death of his son was due to tireless work given by the seniors even after knowing that he was unwell and suffering from pneumonia.
While he was pursuing postgraduation, Dr. Ramani was deployed at the surgery ward of the New Civil Hospital to treat patients. The family said they also forwarded the complaint to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel among others.
The student was said to have fallen ill in the last week of November and he was given a few leaves.
Even as he resumed work, his health continued to deteriorate. On December 31, he reportedly collapsed on duty while he was monitoring a patient.
Responding to the family’s allegations, Dr Verma said, “It is an unfortunate incident of death of our student and a doctor. We have received an application from Dr Rajendra’s father against the seniors. We have constituted a team of three professors to probe the incident.”
Dr Verma further added, “Dr Rajendra Ramani had done his internship in my department, and he was a sincere student. We have taken this matter seriously.”
